Thank you Angelo, for making a great point. What would be examples of some of those curious questions you would ask that are not the "what do you do?" variety?

Martin

Of all the points I like the one about follow up. It's easy to collect piles of business cards and only call the people up when you need help. It only takes a few seconds to send a person a tweet or an email.

Could I throw one more point in for shy people? Be curious. I know how intimidating it could be when you're at an event surrounded by strangers. But asking the curious questions, rather than 'what do you do?" makes it easier for the ice to be broken.

Thank you Frank. A lot of what I wrote on this post comes from my own personal experience in the last year. i met some high volume (and high value) networkers, listened, and learned how they network. The remark about 'slow networking' was actually something I learned along the way. That quick 5-10 minutes you're standing with someone is a brief meeting, to really get to know them, offering to meet for coffee or something like that will build that relationship further. One other note that I might add here is, EVERYONE was new at some point, for some it comes more naturally, others it takes a bit of work. But it is worth it.

The first conference I went to was quite nerve racking. I didn't know anyone and I went by myself. However, I have an easy time meeting new people and networking since I had to learn how to do it when I went away to college. These tips are right on and like anything else you need to practice to get good at something. I feel at this point from the massive amount of networking I have done whether online or offline has been a great experience for me and can only help me in the long run. Thanks Martin for this great post. I think a lot of people will get valuable insight from it.
